On Saturday, October 13th the Callisburg HS UIL Speech and debate teams brought home medals after a tough day of completion at the Melissa High School Tournament. Callisburg was one, of only a handful of small schools (2A-3A), who participated in Saturday’s tourney. Yet, students at Callisburg brought their best game and walked away with the following awards.
Connor Shelton and Katie Williams participated in Congressional Debate. This event mirrors debate that takes place within our legislative branches. The contest is conducted in two sessions: morning and afternoon. Shelton and Williams both placed 1st in their morning sessions and walked away with 4th and 6th place finishes in their PM sessions.
Shalynn Blevins, who competes in Prose Interpretation, placed first throughout prelims and semi-finals to advance to finals. There she earned 4th place overall as the only student not from a 5A or 6A school to make it to the podium.
Landon Salsman and David Garcia competed in LD Debate. Salsman placed 10th in a field of 57 students. Salsman had a perfect record, winning all four of his rounds; he never experienced a loss. Garcia had a 2-2 record, and placed as the 7th best speaker of the day. Our other participants included freshman: Drake Landrum, Aidan Eugster and Gabby Bitsche. All four of these freshman had a great day of learning, placing high in rounds and are eager for the next meet.
