    Hello and welcome to the 2016 - 2017 school year!  Check back regularly to get updates and information for this important final year of   your high school career!  
    We are now taking applications for our 2017 Texas Tech Alumni Association scholarships.  Once again, our local chapter will award two $1,000 scholarships to qualified students graduating from Cooke County high schools this year who plan to enroll at Texas Tech University in the fall of 2017.  The deadline is April 15, 2017.  Click here for application information!

    Scholarship Applications due by April 1, 2017

    The student applying for this scholarship must be graduating from one of the following Texas high schools:

    • Plainview High School
    • Menard High School
    • Callisburg High School.
    The student must fill out the online application and submit it either online or mail it to the Foundation. The student must demonstrate successful academic performance in high school, demonstrate high moral character and display involvement in extracurricular activities such as UIL academics, band and/or in their community. The student must provide two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one from a person associated with an extracurricular activity that the student has been involved in. The student must also have a sealed official transcript mailed to the Foundation. This scholarship may continue for up to 8 semesters!  Click here for more info!
    Texas A&M University at Galveston offers educational outreach programs to people of all ages.

    Sea Camp is a week-long residential adventure exploring the wonders of the marine and estuarine environments for campers ages 10-18. As a Sea Camper you will have access to research vessels, oceanographic equipment, laboratory facilities, and a professional staff enabling you to learn about the ocean through hands-on experiences.

    Sea Campus Kids is a marine oriented day program for campers ages 6-11.  Campers will have their hands-on and feet-in as they participate in activities such as wading through a salt marsh, dissecting a fish or seining in the surf. Click here for more info!

    As you are exploring your college options, visit the Common Application website, commonapp.org, to delve deeper into each participating college and university.  There are nearly 700 institutions included on the site for you to research.  A map is located in the hall by the counselor's office with a list of the participating colleges.   
    It's time for the second edition of the 2016 - 2017 Cowboy Connection from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at OSU.  
    Students have the opportunity to see what college is all about at OSU Up Close.  The event gives students an in-depth look into OSU academics by visiting a lab, sitting in on a class, and meeting with current students and faculty in their area of their interest.     OSU's Early Opportunity Scholarship Deadline - Nov. l, 2016.----Students are encouraged to apply for admission and file their FAFSA by Nov. 1, 2016 to meet OSU's  Early Opportunity Scholarship Deadline.  These students will receive their first round of scholarship and financial aid options by early December and will be among the first to be considered for the highest level scholarship opportunities. However, if students miss the Nov. 1 deadline, they have a second scholarship opportunity - the Feb 1 Priority Scholarship Deadline.

    The US Air Force Academy strives to create a highly qualified and truly diverse cadet wing at the academy each year.  They are looking for students who have a desire to serve and seek an education that is on par with highly selective colleges and universities.
    Key Dates:  Deadline for submitting the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire online is Dec. 31, 2016.
                        Congressional representatives and other nominating entities submit nominations to the academy between Dec. 1, 2016 and
                        Jan 31, 2017.  
                        Applications for the Summer Seminar program are open from Dec. 1, 2016 - Jan. 15, 2017.  
    During a student's junior year, the application process truly begins. Students start by filling out the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire which becomes available online March 1 every year. 
     Between March 1 of their junior year and Dec 31 of their senior year, they must also request nominations from their state's congressional representative(s) or other designated nominators.
    Campus tours are conducted regularly throughout the academic year and require reservations 14 days in advance.

    Attention Seniors interested in Art and Design:  Pratt MWP, Utica, NY is accepting applications to this top ranked design school.  They offer majors in Art & Design Education, Communications Design, Fine Arts and Photography.  Scholarships area considered for all accepted students based on portfolio, grades and test scores, and range up to half-tuition.  Deadline for application is Jan. 5, 2017.  For application instructions, catalog, and further information visit www.mwpai.edu/admissions. 
    24 / 7 SCHOLARS DAY
    "Knowledge Never Sleeps" - Texas A & M University - Commerce is calling all top 10% scholars for 24 hours of engagement on Oct. 14, 2016.  Check in starts at 1:30 pm for Meet & Greet, education and fun. Stay overnight in Residence Hall then join them for Mane Event Preview Day on Oct. 15.  Register at tamuc.edu/campusvisits.  Registration code is "Top 10". 
    Juniors, Seniors, families and guests are invited to attend The Mane Event Preview Day at Texas A & M University - Commerce on Oct. 15, 2016.  From 8:00 am to 2:00 pm you will have an opportunity to speak with representatives from Undergraduate Admissions, Residential Living & Learning, Financial Aid and more.  Faculty Interactive sessions provide a glimpse into the 140+ programs and majors being offered.  For more information and online registration go to tamuc.edu/ManeEvent.
    DISCOVER - UALR is the perfect way to visit the college campus and explore opportunities.  Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend Friday, 10-7-16 or Friday, 10-28-16 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  RSVP at ualr.edu/admissions/discover.  There will be a $1000 scholarship drawing and an Instagram scholarship contest.  You will discover the UALR campus, and be able to get the college application process started.

                                                             GENERATION TEXAS DECISION DAY 2016 CONTEST

                                               TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY - LEADERSHIP EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT 
                                                                               August 2, 2016  -  August 5, 2016
     Texas Tech University is encouraging students to apply for Camp L.E.A.D., their leadership education & development program.  During this 4 day / 3 night program, students will participate in activities ranging from individualized leadership sessions to group challenges and team building activities.  All expenses including transportation, housing and curriculum materials are provided at no cost to students admitted to the program.  Admission is highly selective.                                                                  VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
    VCU is a member of the Common Application and offers rolling admissions with a January 15, 2016 regular decision deadline.  Students who wish to be reviewed and have a decision made on their application by April l, must complete and have all materials submitted by the decision deadline.  Visit ugrad@vcu.edu for more information.

    P.S. Once you receive your College Acceptance Letter, Military Assignment or Vocational Plan Acceptance please bring to Mrs. Griffin for our Post Secondary Wall! This is your chance to show your 
    fellow students, teachers, counselor and Administration your SUCCESS!!!
    Make sure you have 26 credits to graduate by the end of this year. Remember, not just any 26 credits will do the trick. Make sure you have the following: 4-English, 4 Science, 4 Math, 4 History, 1 Fine Art, 1/2 Speech1 P.E/Athletics, 2-3 Foreign Language, and the rest Electives to equal 26. Remember, every credit counts...Seniors must be in at least 5 classes their Senior Year.
    Tell your parents about Financial Aid Meeting that will be at school-Date TBA!
    Sign-up for SAT or ACT if you have not done so already. Pick up information on Military Service if interested.
     Go to "Go Center" and look through College Info. and/or Vocational School information.
    Get teachers, principals, counselor, and coaches to write recommendation letters for you.
     Allow writer 2-weeks to write recommendation for you.
    Start looking for Scholarship Information on the Wildcat Scholarship Website.
     Continue to get Recommendations collected for College Application.

    Remind Families about Financial Aid Meeting

     December is the best time -if you haven't alreadty done so-to submit your official College Application.
     Due dates for most Universities is in March but by that time, most colleges have already made many admission decisions.
    Upon receipt of acceptance letter, request and complete FAFSA information from future school's Financial Aid Department.
    Make sure FAFSA is completed and returned by March. You will need tax information to complete your -FAFSA
     financial aid application.


    United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP)

    The USSYP is a unique educational experience for outstanding junior or senior high school students who demonstrate leadership and an interest in government. Texas selects two student leaders as delegates and two as alternates. The delegates spend a week in Washington, D.C. immersed in leadership activities. Delegates will visit the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court, and Pentagon. Delegates will hear major addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials of the Department of State and the Department of Defense, as well as other federal departments. Delegates have all transportation, hotel and meal expenses provided. Each delegate is also awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies. The program is sponsored by the Hearst Foundations.

    United States Presidential Scholars Program

    The United States (U.S.) Presidential Scholars Program honors graduating seniors for their outstanding scholarship and achievement. Seniors chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to receive a medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. While there, the students have opportunities to engage with accomplished people, participate in conversations over issues that concern America and the world, and participate in other activities.

    TEA invites high school seniors graduating between January and June of 2015 to apply for the opportunity to be a U.S. Presidential Scholar. The Commissioner of Education will nominate five male and five female candidates to apply for the honor.
